Chaenomeles produces an abundance of dark orange-red, cupped blooms with golden-yellow centres. These first appear on bare, thorny branches before being accompanied by round, shiny green leaves.
The flowers are followed by considerable crops of yellowish-green fruits which help to maintain the colourful display through the summer. It has a spreading growth habit and flowers most spectacularly in full sun, making it useful for being trained up a sunny wall.
