Grown worldwide for its edible fruit, aubergine is typically used as a vegetable in cooking. Most commonly purple, the spongy, absorbent fruit is used in several cuisines.
 
Growing aubergines in the UK requires a warm, sheltered spot - ideally a greenhouse or polytunnel - as they are tender plants needing warm temperatures. Plant in 30cm pots of potting compost or in borders, and water consistently, feeding with tomato fertilizer every two weeks.
